Holstein Friesian is the major breed of dairy cattle in Australia and is the world’s highest production dairy animal.
Holsteins are large cattle with distinctive colour patterns of red and white or black and white. These cows can reach a height of 150cm tall and weigh over 600kgs. The Holstein Bulls are over 180cms tall and weigh over 1000kgs (nearly the size of a small car). Holstein heifers are able to be bred at around 13 months, when they weigh about 362kgs. The average productive life of a Holstein is, on average, four years.
Holstein Friesian cows produce the largest quantities of milk, some producing 10,000 litres a year. That’s the equivalent of around 5000 two litre milk cartons every year.
